The AI Coordinating Council (AICC) serves as a university-wide mechanism to coordinate, connect, and advance Penn State’s artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives across its land-grant mission. Convened by the Office of the Vice Provost for Artificial Intelligence (VPAI), the Council connects the VPAI Office with colleges, campuses, institutes, academic and administrative units, and other communities across the University.

The Council promotes coordination without unnecessary centralization. It provides a forum for sharing information, aligning complementary activities, catalyzing collaboration, surfacing needs and barriers, and translating university-wide AI priorities into action across Penn State’s distributed environment.

Tiered Structure

The AICC operates through a tiered structure designed to combine executive coordination, broad university-wide integration, and sustained attention to specialized domains. The structure consists of an Executive Committee, a university-wide AI Integration Committee, and three domain subcommittees.

These bodies are complementary rather than separate working silos: issues should move across them whenever effective action requires expertise or coordination from more than one domain.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee provides overall coordination for the AICC, sets agendas and priorities, connects the work of the committees and subcommittees, and determines when issues should be elevated to University leadership or governance bodies. It is not a substitute for established University decision-making or governance processes.

University-wide AI Integration Committee

The University-wide AI Integration Committee is the principal forum for broad representation and for issues whose implications span multiple missions, disciplines, campuses, or administrative domains. Its role is to integrate perspectives, identify interdependencies, and help ensure that specialized work remains connected to the larger University AI ecosystem.
