AI Hub accepting nominations for 2026 AI Awards

The Penn State AI Hub is now accepting nominations for four AI Awards — AI Societal Impact Award, Best Undergraduate (honors) Thesis or Senior Project in AI, Best Master's Thesis in AI, and Best Doctoral Dissertation in AI — from Penn State faculty, staff, students and alumni. Deadline to submit nominations is Friday, April 17, 2026, by 5 p.m. EST.

Penn State launches AI literacy framework to advance University-wide AI literacy initiative

As part of the recently announced AI Transformation Initiative, Penn State is launching the first component of an AI literacy effort to support students, faculty, academic administrators and staff in engaging responsibly and effectively with AI technologies.

Mar 25, 2026 - Matthew Kapelewski, class of 2012, Eberly College of Science, Schreyer Honors College, is director of chemistry at Orbital, an artificial intelligence-focused startup in Princeton, New Jersey, leading teams developing advanced materials for carbon dioxide capture and energy-efficient cooling. At Penn State, he held multiple leadership roles in Atlas, a THON organization, including fundraising chair, directing initiatives that raised over $370,000 for children with cancer. He continues to mentor students and support Penn State programs.  He was awarded via the 2026 Alumni Achievement Awards.

Low-cost sensor system could warn farmers of salt stress in plants

Mar 24, 2026 - A team of researchers at Penn State used and trained AI machine learning models for a proof-of-concept study that aims help growers identify and mitigate salt stress to plants. The team built a low-cost sensor system that detects signals by plants in trouble.
