Session and Usage Limits

Gemini relies on a fluid "compute-used" resource tracking system. Rather than counting your total number of text messages, Google dynamically monitors how much processing power your conversation consumes.

How It Works:

  • Instead of counting individual messages, Gemini measures total token consumption. It factors in the complexity of your prompt, the specific model or feature you choose, and the cumulative length of your active chat thread. To learn more about how to work within your usage limits, review Best Practices for Using AI Tools.

Usage Caps:

  • Usage is tracked inside a rolling 5-hour window. If you burn through your compute allowance within those 5 hours, Gemini will automatically downgrade you to a lighter model (such as Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite) rather than ending your session. These 5-hour windows accumulate toward a broader weekly usage cap.

What's Free?

  • Basic prompts utilizing the Flash-Lite model do not count toward your compute quota. Following user feedback, Google also capped the maximum compute a single prompt can burn and stopped counting failed/errored requests against your quota.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Expanded Capabilities

As a standalone enterprise tool outside of AI Studio, Gemini expands your capabilities by allowing you to create custom Gemini Gems (Agents) for tailored tasks. It also provides seamless integration directly within the Chrome browser and a connection to NotebookLM for advanced document research and analysis.

  • Multimodal Intelligence

Seamlessly analyzes text, images, spreadsheets, and code simultaneously. Multimodal simply means you can interact with text, voice, or images.

  • Google Workspace Integration

Seamlessly pulls data from or exports results directly to Google Docs, and Sheets.

  • Code Generation and Refactoring

Exceptionally strong at writing, debugging, and translating software code across dozens of programming languages.

  • Added data protection

Penn State’s Gemini licensing includes added data protection.

Appropriate Data Usage

To ensure data security, only Level 1 (public) or Level 2 (moderate) data should be used with Gemini. While Gemini does not use data from Gemini chat to train their AI models, it’s still crucial to exercise caution. Ensure you understand Penn State’s data classification guidelines. Do not use Google Gemini with Level 3 or 4 data.

  • Do NOT input highly confidential (Level 3 or 4) data.
