At Penn State, AI literacy means understanding how AI works, when and when not to use it, and how to engage with it thoughtfully, ethically, and responsibly across learning, research, and work.
AI Literacy Framework
Penn State’s AI Literacy Framework defines what it means to be AI‑literate at the University and provides a foundation for learning, teaching, and professional development efforts.
The framework guides the design of courses, training, and resources by emphasizing four interconnected dimensions of AI literacy:
-
Technical knowledge
Understanding how AI systems work and their capabilities and limitations
-
Ethical awareness and social responsibility
Engaging with issues such as bias, transparency, privacy, and societal impact
-
Critical thinking and evaluation
Assessing AI‑generated content, asking better questions, and making informed judgments
-
Practical and appropriate use
Applying AI tools effectively and responsibly in real‑world contexts
