Penn State supports the responsible exploration and use of AI.
These general guidelines provide a shared foundation to help the Penn State community make informed decisions when using AI tools.
-
Determine if you need to disclose your use of AI or if there are other restrictions on its use
-
Students should check with instructors
-
Staff should check with their supervisors
-
Researchers should check with journal editors
-
Be sure to verify the AI output
-
Check for bias, discrimination, and other ethical issues
-
Check that it is accurate, reliable, and contains appropriate citations to real sources
Accessibility Considerations for AI Tools
AI tools vary in their level of accessibility, which can create barriers for some users. When an AI tool is used by more than one person (such as in a class, program, or administrative office) an accessibility review is required before use to comply with Policy AD69.
Request an accessibility review if:
-
The AI tool will be used by multiple users, and
-
The tool supports instructional, administrative, or shared work.
How to Request an Accessibility Review
To initiate a review, email accessibility@psu.edu and include:
-
The name of the AI tool
-
Intended use (for example, a course activity or office workflow)
-
Estimated number of users
If accessibility gaps are identified, an Enterprise‑wide Equally Effective Alternative Access Plan (EEAAP) will be required.
Pre‑Reviewed Tools and EEAAP Templates
The Accessibility Office has reviewed the tools listed below and provides EEAAP templates to support group use. You must still submit an EEAAP for your specific use case, even if the tool is listed.
Use of AI Software to Assist with Grading Student Work
Instructors need to secure approval prior to using courseware. Software being used to assist with grading is classified as courseware. Before submitting a request for an AI-assisted grading software, approval is needed (email is sufficient) from both the department head and dean, or appropriate academic leadership at commonwealth campuses.
Is the courseware already on the Reviewed Courseware List?
-
If yes, send an email to courseware@psu.edu identifying the courseware to be used along with the approvals from the department head and dean, or appropriate commonwealth campus leadership, confirming that the intended courseware use for grading student work is approved.
-
If no, fill out the online Software Request Form. Email courseware@psu.edu with a copy of the completed Software Request Form, along with the approvals from the department head and dean, or appropriate commonwealth campus leadership, confirming that the intended courseware use to assist with grading student work is approved.
