AI Centers of Penn State

The Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Scientific Applications

The Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Scientific Applications (CENSAI) aims to foster collaborative, interdisciplinary research across Penn State and beyond aimed at addressing the AI grand challenge of accelerating scientific progress through synergistic advances across multiple areas of AI, including:

  • Literature-based discovery, e.g., extraction, annotation, reconciliation, integration, and validation of scientific claims, hypotheses, and supporting and opposing evidence from the literature
  • Scientific knowledge representation, e.g., frameworks for encoding, communicating, and reasoning with models or abstractions of scientific domains, scientific artifacts (data, experiments, hypotheses, models, scientific arguments, etc.);
  • Experiment planning and optimization, e.g., based on the scientific goals, cost of experiments, expected value of information, etc.
  • Machine learning and causal inference, including methods that incorporate prior knowledge, e.g., from physics, explain the learned models and their predictions,
  • Human-AI collaboration needed for AI-enabled collaborative science, using algorithmic abstractions as the medium for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Center for Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Industry

Penn State’s Center for Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Industry (AIMI) connects industry members with Penn State’s vast research community of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) researchers and their students to solve real-world problems and seize market opportunities.

AIMI funds exploratory, high-impact research in partnerships with AIMI’s industry members in an innovative membership model that shares ownership of the intellectual property of the solutions developed. By working with AIMI, your organization is connected with like-minded researchers who want to develop AI-focused solutions that can advance industry.

  • Contribute to the nation’s research infrastructure base by developing long-term partnerships among industry, academia and others
  • Leverage funds across industry members to support interdisciplinary research teams performing industrially relevant, pre-competitive, exploratory research
  • Expand the innovation capacity of our nation’s competitive workforce

Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence

Penn State’s Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence aims to enhance interdisciplinary education, research, and outreach in artificial intelligence; its applications; and its impact on work, society, and all aspects of our daily lives. Launched in April 2020 and housed administratively in the College of Information Sciences and Technology, the Center aims to promote, practice and study socially responsible ways of building, deploying and using AI technology, with an emphasis on understanding the social and ethical implications of these activities. The Center also supports and encourages activities that enhance social good through the ethical use of AI and efforts that can mitigate threats from its misuse.

By engaging diverse groups of scholars from the earliest design stages through the deployment of new AI-based technologies, CSRAI embraces a holistic approach that encourages that all AI research and development activities to consider social and ethical implications as well as intended and possible unintended consequences. Only when we can bring together scholars from diverse areas—policy experts, engineers, ethicists, philosophers, and sociologists—can we understand how to best develop and deploy new AI-based technologies from day one.

Center for Artificial Intelligence Foundations and Engineered Systems

The mission of CAFE is to accelerate advances in AI to solve complex problems in engineering systems at scale. CAFE’s holistic approach will promote interactions between researchers developing foundational AI technologies and those who apply these technologies in a variety of fields, primarily focused on engineered systems. CAFE’s goals include:

  • Accelerating foundational advances in AI theory and algorithms.
  • Scaling the impact of AI across multiple science and engineering disciplines.
  • Establishing a common foundation that enables decentralized innovation for new challenges and rapid response to emerging needs.
  • Evolving partnerships with industry, national labs, government agencies, and other academic partners for rapid technology transition and broad societal impact.
  • Cultivating a leading AI workforce through curricular development.
  • Developing K-12 and public outreach efforts to promote AI awareness.
